glass is a very good uv filter? wtf are you smoking? you can add a uv filter to glass as you can polarization or just plain color. but by default, normal glass is a very poor uv filter
Yes, but not as quickly as without the glass. While glass absorbs
short wavelength ultraviolet light, it does pass 350 to 400 nanometer
ultraviolet. While this longer wavelength ultraviolet is less harmful
than the shorter wavelength variety, you can still tan or burn if you
get enough exposure. Glass is like sunscreen--it protects you pretty
well but it isn't perfect."

I think the issue was someone confusing UV and IR filtering.
Glass will block most infrared light but wont block most ultraviolet light. This is the reason the lenses for IR cameras are so hugely expensive as they cant be made from glass :)

You dumb ass - you had the window wound down. Normal domestic and auto glass filters out UV light and allows IR (infrared) through. You CAN'T get a suntan through glass, but you can still feel the heat of the sun (that's the infrared btw).

I definitely had a nasty burn on my left arm and the left side of my face after sitting by the window on a bus. It was one of those tour buses -- you can't put the window down.
And whoever said that's cruel... it's definitely not. The crab only goes in a shell if it likes it... and if it doesn't, it leaves immediately. I have two crabs... and I want to get glass shells for them because it's so neat!! If they don't like it, they'll switch back to their other shells. Not a big deal...

Saying that a hermit crab won't go into a shell it doesn't like just proves you know nothing about hermit crabs. Do a little research on all the companies that force crabs into painted shells that nearly every pet store sells. They force these crabs out of their shells, usually by raising or lowering the temperature to the point that the crab goes into shock and runs from it's natural shell. Then they're moved into a container that only contains painted shells, and anyone who owns hermit crabs knows that the shells that all these crabs are in, 99% of the time these are not the typical shells that these crabs would be in. This is a sick and awful idea, anyone who does this to a hermit crab is committing animal cruelty.

I'm scheduled for surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma patch from my forearm -- where I got burned a couple to times on long road trips. Thankfully now that we've emigrated to the USA, where they drive on the other side of the road, my sun damaged arm will no longer be up against the window!

I have, and i got "truckers arm".

I get sunburned very quickly, and while sitting in a Chic-Fil-A restaurant, near a darkly tinted window, I got a sun burn in less than 15 minutes of high Texas sun.
Tinted.... Glass...
Granted, the UV index was at a 10, and this was during the peak of the day, but still. The right side of my face and right arm (both getting the sunny side) were red when I left.

The light will be exactly the same when it emerges from the glass as when it went in, its time inside the glass it may have a low enough energy to not burn said hermit crab, but when it leaves the glass it will regain its speed & therefore energy and regain its former properties....dumbass.

In reply to another comment: Hermit crabs can be both terrestial and aquatic, it depends on their species. That one is an aquatic crab, the easiest way to recognize them are the eyes, they are different form the eyes of land hermit crabs.
I do hope that the crab chose the shell on its own or at least was offered other shells to change into after taking the picture. Interesting to see, though.
