Its common understanding among those who study animals and just regular cat owners, that felines sit on the highest peak as a symbol of power. That's because cats have developed to attack from higher ground as it gives them the advantage. It's the cat's way of saying, I have the advantage.

You're right with the fact that you can reposition them when they are in your way, so there is the struggle there. Usually the cat gives up, other times it becomes more resilient, that all adds to the personality.

The same is with dogs in many ways, the dog see itself as a servant from conception and slowly begs for more and more until he thinks he is on equal ground with you. Dogs are loyal, but they still have personality!
