You can indeed create glass that protects against UV light without being dark. The best example is Alcopop (alcoholic beverages mixed with sodas) bottles. Some of them contain beer, so normally they would have to be in a dark bottle (the reason for that is that the sunlight damages the beer). However, they are usually sold in light bottles. Still, that is not harmed. The reason is that the glass used for those light glass bottles is not regular bottled glass, but has extra reflecting components, that help against the UV light. It doesn't help against the general glare of sunlight though, so while it protects the eyes from UV light if it were used in sunglasses, you'd still have to squint.
