As a Westerner, I think you could do a lot worse than read "We Are Iran" by Nasrin Alavi, which is a portrait of the nation via extracts from thousands of Iranian blogs.

I thought I knew about Iran, but I really didn't before reading this book. It brought me some of the way towards understanding what life is actually like for average Iranian citizens.

A truly amazing book!
